Year 3
Class Letter Spring Term 2010
18th April 2010
Dear Parents,
I hope you have all enjoyed the Easter break and are looking forward to some warmer weather and sunshine.
Dates for your diary:
- SATs week – 10th-14th May. Y3 will have informal tests this week.
- Public Speaking Competition – Friday 9th July. A poem will be sent home to learn nearer the date for those who wish to take part.
- Junior Sports Day will be held on Monday 5th July (if it is cancelled due to the weather it will be held on Tuesday 6th July).
- Y3 & 4’s Summer Play: ‘Viking Rocks’ at 6:30 on Tuesday, 20th July
In Numeracy we will be extending and consolidating previously taught skills in accordance with the National Numeracy Framework. We will also be focussing closely on the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables and mental addition and subtraction facts.
This term the children will be continuing with Literacy Hour and the additional reading lesson. As before the children are going to read a short novel together – ‘The Dancing Bear’ - as a whole class and concentrate upon reading strategies. We will analyse characters and themes and look closely at writing techniques.
Science begins this term with ‘Friction’. This will be followed by ‘Light and Shadows.’ In the final unit, we will be looking at ‘Rocks & Soils.’
In Geography, we will first of all be carrying on with our ‘Local Environmental Issue’. After half term we will be again looking at Africa and its way of life.
This half term, our DT topic will be ‘Moving Monsters. This will involve the children designing and making their own Monster. They will be asked to bring in ‘junk’ such as small cardboard tea boxes etc.
Our artwork is based on investigating how sculptures can change and improve the look of places. We will then design and make our own sculptures, using recycled materials wherever possible.
This term’s RE will be looking at the Sikh religion and their belief in Gurus. We will consider the idea of leaders and how we have leaders in our lives. We will also look at our role as citizens: how we can be active and look at how others are already active within the community.
Our music lessons will focus on learning and singing songs which we will then accompany using a range of instruments so that we become a class orchestra!
In ICT we will continue to use the laptops and classroom computers. We shall be looking at simulations and consolidating all skills learnt this year
PE will be still on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. For a few weeks, we are fortunate to be having tennis lessons from James Handforth from Moorland Tennis Club. Please ensure that your child has the appropriate kit in school for these, including pumps or trainers, as we will be going outside as often as possible.
Our trip will be to Preston in June when we shall visit a Sikh place of worship and look at Sculptures and make our own at the Harris Museum. Specific details will follow when the necessary arrangements have been finalised.
At the end of last term, your child brought home their ‘Milestones’ book. Please could these be returned to school this week if not already returned.
I’m delighted to report that Miss Walsh will be helping us every morning this term!
Please continue to ask if you have any queries.
Many thanks for your continued support,
Clare Hassett
