Year 4

Class Letter Summer Term 2010

I hope that you have had an enjoyable Easter break and are ready for your final term in year 4.

English

The topics we will cover throughout the term include; Stories which Raise Issues and Dilemmas, Plays and Persuasive Texts. The class reader for this term is ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl.

Numeracy

We will continue to cover the topics of counting, partitioning and calculating; securing number facts and understanding shape; handling data and measuring; and problem solving.

Science

In science lessons we will be learning about Keeping Warm and then about Habitats. The children will be carrying out a number of scientific investigations throughout the term.

ICT

Children will be learning how to Model Effects on Screen and how to create and use a Branching Database.

Geography

We will be studying the world environmental issue of the destruction of the rainforest.

History

In History we will be learning all about the Vikings. We are lucky enough to have a topic box from the History Loan Service which will enhance this topic.

Music

Mr Black will continue to teach guitar lessons every Friday. Please make sure that your child has their guitar in school every Friday.
I will also be teaching a music unit called ‘Painting with Sound’.

RE

This half term we will focus RE lessons on questioning and appreciating different beliefs.

Art

Children will be studying the topic of ‘Take a Seat’ and will create their own artistic seat design.

DT

The children will learn how to make money containers using textiles.

PE

We will be spending as much time as possible out on the school field this term practising athletics. Your child must have a full PE kit in school every day, including trainers or pumps.

Swimming

Year 4 children will be going swimming at Poulton pool every Thursday afternoon this term. Please see the separate swimming letter giving details of the kit required and arrangements for picking up.

PSHE

PSHE lessons will take two themes; ‘Me, and Looking After Myself’ and ‘Animals and Us’.

French

We will cover the topics of ‘Our Sporting Lives’ and ‘Carnival of the Animals’ during our weekly French lessons with Mrs Bennett.

Class and Individual Targets

Please have a look in your child’s homework book to find out what the class targets are and what your child’s individual targets are.

Homework

I will continue to send homework out on a Friday. Homework needs to be handed in no later than the following Wednesday.

Miss Byrne-Fraser will continue to work with us every morning.
