Year 5

Class Letter Summer Term 2010

Dear Parents and Year 5,

Welcome back. I hope you have all had a relaxing break and are ready for what promises to be an exciting and action packed final term in Year 5.

During the week commencing 10th May, the class will be taking their optional SATs tests. These will form part of their overall assessment for the school year, though the main aim for year 5 is the valuable practise in exam technique, ahead of their final year tests in Year 6.

The children’s timetable will remain very similar to that of the autumn and spring terms. The exception to this being that with swimming sessions now complete, PE will take its place on Thursday afternoons. As always please make sure your child’s PE kit stays in school for the duration of the week to maintain our flexibility to use the outdoors whenever possible.

This term’s History topic is a study of a Victorian Britain and in particular the contrasts between the lives of children then and childhood now.

Our studies into sacred religious texts continue in RE with a look at the Bible and in particular Bible stories featuring Jesus.

In Science we are to investigate the forces that are all around us, discover how we see things and what we know about light and then towards the end of term we will be constructing our own electrical circuits.

Our ICT sessions will involve researching devices and then writing procedures to make our own models work and will conclude with using sensors to monitor changing environmental conditions.

In Art the children will be creating an individual piece of needlework that will then be joined to make a class patchwork and in DT we will be making toys that move using a cam mechanism.

During the second half term I will be taking the class on two off-site visits. The first will be a day of outdoor adventure at Hothersall Outdoor Education Centre. This will consist of a series of challenges in orienteering, problem-solving, climbing and abseiling.

Also to support our studies in Geography we will be going on a riverside walk from Skipool Creek to Wyre Estuary Country Park. This walk will be led by the Wyre Countryside Rangers and is aimed at examining the features of the River Wyre and the ecology of the Wyre Estuary.

Further details of both visits will be sent out in the coming weeks, once dates have been confirmed and approval has been given by the school’s governing body.

If you have any questions concerning the term ahead please pop in and see me any time.

It should be a great term!
Yours Sincerely
Mr Hesketh
