Year 6
Class Letter Spring Term 2012
3rd January 2012
This is a really hard and busy term for your children, not only do they have all curriculum areas to cover; they will also spend a great deal of time preparing for their SAT’s.I have planned the term’s work, lessons, projects, camp, class assemblies and SAT’s preparation.
In Literacy I intend to focus on the development of each child’s comprehension skills.I will continue to assess children’s writing and discuss with them what they need to do to move forwards to the next level.
In Numeracy I will continue to help each child to apply their skills and knowledge to all aspects of Numeracy especially 'problem solving' in real life situations.
During the term in Geography we will focus on key skills using Australasia as a focus. Throughout this unit children will plan trips to different continents focusing on time differences, time and miles travelled working towards travelling to Australasia and finding out about the different countries and terrain. This will support lots of Numeracy targets and help to impact upon each child’s problem solving skills.
In DT we will discuss and evaluate slippers, looking at the creative processes that are involved for designers including the functions, cost and safety implications. Our needlework skills will be tested when we make our ‘made to measure’ moccasins. In Art we are going to investigate headwear and costumes worn in different times and cultures, including theatre costume and hopefully design and make hats.
We will start the spring term by focusing on circuits and reversible and irreversible changes in science then move on to science revision ready for SATs.
We use ICT for so much and it is integrated throughout all curriculum subjects. We are going to focus particularly on searching databases and gathering and interpreting information and use of the Internet.
Our RE units focus on ‘Life as a Journey’ and we focus on Jesus as we move towards Easter. The children will discuss and share their ideas about forgiveness.
Our Music topic is called’ Performing Together’, and our PHSE topic will focus on the children playing active roles as citizens.
PE will play a big part of our Year 6 life as we begin to work harder and harder moving towards the SATs term. Children will have lots of excess energy and I intend to fit as many sports/ PE sessions in as I can.I would appreciate PE kits being in school at all times.
SAT’s week begins on Monday the 14th of May and finishes on Friday 18th May.. I don’t want any child to feel under pressure or anxious about their SAT’s. I continually tell my class how wonderful they are and that I know they will all do their best.
I have booked the Year 6 summer camp for week beginning Monday 9th July.
Homework will continue and your children will be bringing home SAT’s preparation material.
Many Thanks
Miss R Snape
