Mrs Wood's Farewell Letter

8th December 2011

Dear parents, friends and well wishers,

It’s really hard to write what will be my last Breck School letter but I thought I would share some of my fondest memories with you. My eldest daughter started at The Breck in 1989 and my youngest daughter a year later. From the moment we walked through the door we loved it – and we still do. Mr Tyas was the headteacher at the time and he made the school ‘feel’ special. The children didn’t wear a uniform and were encouraged to be independent ‘free-spirits’. There were only 120 children on roll and it felt so relaxed. I came into help as a mummy and started working as one of the dinner ladies. I joined the PTA and became one of the Parent Governors. Some of the teachers really encouraged me to become a teacher and to them I am eternally indebted.

In 1990 Mr Bailey was appointed as Headteacher. He inspired me to realise the potential of ‘the great outdoors’ and we went on some amazing school trips to the Lakes. He had a vision about the importance of sport , physical activity and being competitive that made The Breck equally wonderful in his time. My children loved The Breck and still do – no one can ever take such wonderful memories from you.

I qualified to teach in 1995 and have loved (almost) every minute of it. I taught for a short while at a school in Fleetwood (until a post became available at The Breck.) With only 8 years experience Mr Bailey retired and I was appointed to be his successor. I hope that what I lacked in experience I have made up for in commitment and passion. My own vision was to build on everything that made the Breck unique but more importantly to make it into ‘the Best School in The World’. I wanted us to be the school that everyone would want their child to come to where children were happy, confident, independent, sociable and keen to reach or exceed their potential.

I have wanted to make a difference to every child in my care because I do believe that to teach is to touch a life forever. I see so many wonderful young people whom I taught – some who now have children of their own who are starting at The Breck - and I remember each and every one of them. It really does make me feel very old but very proud.

So here we are 8 years later and what a journey we’ve been on! When I think back it feels like we’ve had a major building project on the go every year – The Sunshine Room, the complete toilet refurbishment (having nice toilets are so important to everyone’s well being!), building Willow class in the centre of school to allow us to open Breck Beanies, the new front entrance and staffroom extension, the redesign of the outside of school with new equipment and facilities including the all weather pitch and the track around the field. My final project has been the new extension at the back of school – the gift of space. The new rooms will hopefully provide opportunities to explore and develop exciting and practical group work which we simply can’t do in corridors! As a school we now have 246 children on roll and we are the school of choice for most local parents and I truly believe that we are ‘The Best School in the World’ – a view clearly endorsed by Ofsted in June.

To the staff and the Governors at The Breck - you are amazing. I am sorry if I haven’t said ‘thank you’ often enough to them – how ever often could never be enough. There’s a real ‘team’ spirit about this school which I will cherish always.

To the PTA and all parents past and present – well done for choosing The Breck. In my time we have raised around £100,000 -  all of which has been used to enhance and enrich the children’s experiences. Parental involvement is very dear to my heart – it’s where I started. Together we make a great team.

To the children, I will miss you all. Be everything you want to be in your life, never be afraid to be different – uniqueness is a wonderful quality. Always try to work hard and play hard – you should want to be a winner. Believe in yourself, make yourself proud and others will be proud of you too. Aim to be a role model for others and remember to spread happiness wherever you go.

And so it is time to leave.

I’m moving to Grimsby to be near my family. My eldest daughter and her husband are having their first baby – my first grandchild – in March. I’m so excited. My new school are looking forward to my arrival (or so they say) as they have been without a headteacher since summer, and I am looking forward to the new challenge.

So Goodbye.

Thank you for everything

With much love

Janet Wood
